Topic:  Elements of a Good Pack Meeting

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • John Harkey - Talked about Unit Commissioners, every unit has a UC and is their liaison between the Pack and District. They are your resource - use them. If you don't know who your UC is contact District and they will let you know.
  • Curt Clark - Webelos Encampment is October 6 - 8 at Camp Kikthawenund and is put on by Firecrafter and Order of the Arrow, it will count as Webelos/Boy Scout camp. Bring your own food and have fun!! Curt can be reached at 698-9382 cell.
  • David Bardos - Eagle board of review is the 3rd Thursday of the month and this Thursday there will be 7 going for Eagle. If you would like to come see it, they meet at First United Methodist Church. You can go online and find out what kinds of questions are asked of the Eagle candidates.
  • Chuck Harris - Awards applications: check due dates- some are due very soon. Silver Beaver deadline was 9/14/06.
  • Nat Baker - Cub Scout Fun Day at Camp Belzer October 7th. Cost is $5. It is a pre-Day Camp experience for new Scouts.
  • Dave Holloway - POWWOW Saturday November 4th, 7:30am – 4pm at Stonybrook Middle School - offering training for new leaders and how to do everything a Cub Scout leader needs to do from crafts to songs

  • Everybody should come to Roundtable. We are cutting back on the amount of time announcements take up so that we can get into our meeting.
  • Jerry Montag asked that next month there will be a signup sheet for snacks so we can join in with the Boy Scouts and do a Meet & Greet after Roundtable.

TONIGHT’S TOPIC: Elements of a Good Pack Meeting

  • Opening - Formal with Flag and prayer or invocation.
    • go to Baloo's Bugle online for ideas
    • Program Helps also has theme-related openings and prayers along with olots of other good info for Cubmasters
  • Gathering - Activities to keep boys busy while parents come to you for questions. Some divide activities by age/rank. Should be no more than 10 minutes in length.
  • Announcements - Keep them short, point out main item and then direct parents to flyers on a table
  • Awards
    • some do every award,
    • some only do major awards
    • some do no awards during pack meetings in favor of activities
    • Some do a very formal award ceremony.
    • A lot of packs hand either the den leader a packet with their den’s awards but announce the boy's name
    • others only do awards every 3 months.
    • Boys and Parents alike want to be recognized. Most felt very strongly on this topic and we could have spent the whole night!
    • Some have dens do a song or skit in between each den getting awards.
  • Fun - movies, rockets, songs and games
    • if it's not fun the boys are not going to want to come to your pack meetings
    • some give out prizes for being on time and for wearing their uniform
    • Cubmaster dresses up as an old Scout and instills scouting ideas and values into the cubs
