TONIGHT’S TOPIC: Welcoming New ScoutsWhy do boys join Cub Scouts?- Friends in it
- Dad did it
- To be in a group
How do you welcome new scouts in your September Pack Meeting?- Rocket launch at first meeting, hyped during boy talks at school in the fall
- Belt loop university – new tigers get opportunity for awards (pre-buy so they can be passed out at the end of that first meeting) picking belt loops not normally done – great way to recognize Tigers at first meeting
- Big display of past events to get kids excited about it (important to hold one of those events right away in the beginning of the school year to excite them and keep their interest through popcorn and holidays)
- First pack meeting at LN planetarium – excites kids and tigers get a go-see-it done right away (wait on contact info)
- Create excitement
- Lilly mad scientist program (wait on contact info)
- Bring local Fire Department, Police Department, K-9 units to your first Pack Meeting (every rank has some requirement involving safety and/or rescue!)
TOPIC: Attendance Incentives- Does your Pack use attendance incentives?
- What are some ideas in use by those who do?
- 75% attendance at all Pack and Den meetings – earn the BSA attendance award
- Earn a bear claw for every Pack Meeting/Pack function
- Pack Meeting raffles for attendance and uniform (what about for leaders in uniform?)
- Wear uniforms (Class A or B) on outings
- Den behavior – give each Scout 3 marbles; lose 1 marble for behavior infractions. At the end of the meeting, Scouts place remaining marbles in a jar. When den fills jar, Den goes someplace fun (Carmel Laser Flash owners are lifetime Scouters)
- All Scouts early to the Pack Meeting get entered in drawing (late – no entry)
TOPIC: Den Displays
- Do you encourage your Dens to show off what they’ve done over the past month? Does it work?
- Some Packs have no response to their displays
- Some Packs don’t do it
- Some Packs have Dens come up to share and show what they’ve done (but it can impact meeting time and other meeting activities based on number of dens)
- Some Packs place displays out, but there isn’t any time assigned during the Pack meeting for people to walk around looking at the displays
- Time-saver for Recognition – prepare ahead, have all awards presorted, rearrange Pack meeting seating to improve “flow” or eliminate all the walking back and forth from seats to podium for recognition
